Vanessa Shannon: Preparing Athletes to Take on the Mental Challenges of Sports and Life

When I first met Vanessa I was asked to sit in on her interview for her current position, there was little interview involved, rather it was five people, myself included, being mesmerized by her knowledge and poise. I don’t think that you can hear Vanessa speak and not be impressed. The truth is when you are as passionate as she is about what you do it will show and people will be captivated by that. But she is more than just an absolute bad ass sports psychologist, she is also one of those rare people who can see everyone’s side on an issue, speak truth to you in a compassionate way, and provide advice in a way that still allows you to make your own choice. She is truly one of those women w

Find You First

Dear Younger Self, You have to take care of you. And I don’t mean through meditation (though that is great) or through working out (also great); I mean you have to find what things make you tick. You can’t be afraid to take an unknown path or have your own ideas of what your future should look like. You have to know who you are if you are ever going to flourish in other relationships. And please understand that who you are is ever evolving; you have to search it out and continually be willing to get to know yourself and what makes you happy if you are ever going to be truly content. Too often when you are young you feel this pressure to be something by a certain age. To be married. To have

Stop Labeling Body Types

Curvy. Athletic. Skinny. Fat. Muscular. Plus size.  Any and all of these phrases drive me crazy! Why does a woman’s body have to be given a tag? Why does it need to be defined? Why can’t it just be simple? That regardless of size, shape, or looks it is just our body.  I think what makes me most frustrated is that somehow we have been convinced that adding an adjective like curvy made it all better. I mean what in the hell did that make better? These labels for our bodies keep putting us in boxes, boxes that frankly none of us want to be in, and none of us belong in. I think when we see this in the context of female vs. male body descriptions it becomes even clearer how little these labels ma

Dear Weary One

Dear Weary One, There will be times where it all feels too difficult. There will be times where you feel so lost you aren’t even sure how to start to find a way out. There will be times that everything feels unfair. That life feels too heavy. I want you to know that it is totally normal to feel this way. But I also want to be the voice, if you need it today that tells you to keep moving.  Don’t give up on yourself in these times. Don’t live in it forever but don’t be afraid to allow yourself to feel it either. Too often we try to get people to ‘positive think’ their way out of the bad times. And the truth is we have to feel the depth of our pain sometimes. We have to. When people tell us thi
